Lola: First Look

Here's the first look at my next project for Oni Press, the graphic novel Lola: A Ghost Story. "Lola" is the Tagalog (Filipino) word for grandmother and this story is loosely based on some tall tales about my own maternal grandmother's childhood, some other family "history," as well as some folklore and mythology from the Philippines.

I thought you process junkies out there might appreciate a peek at a page in its pencil and ink stage, plus a sepia tone look we're considering for the final product.

The artist of Lola is the multi-talented Elbert Or, whose blog can be found here. While you're there, make sure to check out his webcomics, which can be accessed from the right hand sidebar. The effectively minimalist and iconic Love and Heartbreak is probably my favourite one, but Camy and Me is also very charming and fun.

Take a look at these pages from Lola (okay, it's actually only one page) and tell us what you think. Also, please keep your eye on this space for more sneak peeks and information the book.

Elbert is planning to wrap up the visuals some time in November, so we're hoping for a late winter/early spring release next year!

Thanks for the email! I gotta say I really like this idea, J!

As far as the visuals go, I like Elbert's approach. I can follow the story without the words, so that's awesome!

Personally I prefer his pencils the most - because I'm a process junkie and because of nice little things I see in there that get glossed over in the inks. For instance, the tree texture.

Have you guys tried scanning from darker pencils? It'll save Elbert some time and might give a cool reminiscent feel to it. Darken them up, smack a sepia tone on it and you're done!

My two bits. I'll buy it any way you do it! It's probably half inked anyway!

As a Fil-Am comic reader, this project is especially exciting! I'm really looking forward to it.
